Oz

Hey, i'm heading out to Australia, for a few months in May and I was just wondering if anyone had any tips for what to do and see and where to hang out while i'm there (other than the obvious ). I'll be in Sydney to start with but i've enough money saved that i'll be able to travel and see other cities and stuff.
Any help would be much appreciated, guide books are all well and good but nothig beats personal experience.

Jo

Re: Oz

i'll second that about canberra.

sydney is fun and has plenty of touristy stuff to do. it's worth going to bondi beach, up whatever the big pointy tower thing is, driving over the bridge (it is a marvel of engineering etc etc). stay in this hotel if you want an incredible view of the harbour bridge and opera house

everyone says that (possibly excluding montreal) melbourne is the best city to live in in the whole world, i was only there briefly but it certainly had a very relaxed atmosphere. in may it won't be overly warm by any means.

western australia is aparently a bit scary; full of gruff sheep farmer types, so if you're in perth, don't spend your whole time looking for a mardis gras or a vibrant gay clubbing scene. one thing to note here is that in pubs, it's assumed you always want another drink unless you specifically say you don't, so it's easy to let the barmen get you hammered inadvertently (even with their tiny beer glasses), as you finish one another swiftly appears.

general hint: take a brazillion memory cards, you'll take a LOT of photos by any standards, cos everything is weeeeeeeeeeeeeeird, from the place-names to the animals that'll surround you much of the time.

Re: Oz

Going to the bathroom in a pub is sure to enrage the barman and offend the locals, it's like spitting out your food in a restaurant.

They eat the courses of their meals in reverse order, involuntarily, it's all to do with being south of the equator.

Dodgy kidneys & bulimia would really make things socially awkward for anyone living there then wouldn't they!

on that note, they don't have locks on bathroom doors in australia.

"well hello, best-friend's fiancee's mother. yes, it's nice to meet you to. yes, it was a bitch of a flight over. yes, i'll be out of the shower soon."

Re: Oz

Its customary on public transport to tip the driver.

Public transport is generally only used by the upper classes anyway, most regular Joes get about by sky diving or surfing.

Re: Oz

theres more shit to do in oz than you can shake a stick at but i would recommend going up the queensland coast taking in fraser island and the whitsundays. ayers rock is a bastard to get to, be sure you really want to see a rock that much before you set off on the ridiculously long and ridiculously expensive journey. if you do want to embark on the journey may i suggest a buddy, a van and an ounce.

melbourne is also a class city and in their summer months things like the great ocean road are well worth doing and st kilda is cool to hang out in.

oh and time when your going, the weather up north is not particulary pleasent in june/july.

Whatttttt? So a bit like the toilets I seem to pick at festivals. Fine.

And if they keep replacing my drink I have a feeling i'm going to spend a lot of my time quite drunk or high on sugar & caffine.
