You just really need to be sensible where to sling your tent (i.e. not in an obvious field* or on obviously owned property**)

*Once you hit a certain point north (i.e. Fort William) this becomes much more difficult to judge. Best bet is woodland.
**Glencoe, for example, is a bit of a weird one for this.

A quick google says you need the Land owners permission in England, In Scotland you can pretty much camp where you like as long as you dont distrurb anything
