Learning a new language

was just wondering whats folks experiences here with self taught methods of learning languages, and which CDs/books etc would you guys recommend??

or do folk think its better to go to a class?

I am interested in learning a new language (Spanish) quite quickly and am wondering about the best way to go about it

If you want to learn to converse you really need to go to a class.

Re: Learning a new language

if you earn less than £18K a year apply to ILA Scotland for a learning grant, and use it to enrol in a local college for a Spanish class.

Will cost you all of £10

Re: Learning a new language

I'd say the best language to learn at the moment would be Arabic.. come in handy in the future..

Re: Learning a new language

I've heard bad things about Rosetta Stone, the Spanish version in particular. Apparently it only teaches you in the present tense which is apparently useless in conversational Spanish. I'd definitely recommend going to classes instead of self-teaching. Dan goes to Spanish night classes at the uni and he loves them.

Re: Learning a new language

I think if you want to learn it quickly then classes will probably be too slow for you. If you can download Pimsleur Spanish or Michel Thomas Spanish via a torrent online, then they're both good for an introduction though Pimsleur takes a long time to complete. If you want to get proper fluency then the best course in my opinion is Assimil, which a lot of people will tell you is rubbish but has helped me immensely with French. They have Spanish courses called "Spanish with Ease" (for beginners) and "Using Spanish" (the advanced course) which you can get off Amazon for £40 or so. It's a really simple method, but works really well from my experience.

Re: Learning a new language

The BEST way is, no matter what your basic learning thingy is, to try and speak the language as often as possible. Find someone else who speaks the language and try and converse with them as much as possible in the language you're learning.

Bump.

Can anyone recommend good Spanish classes (evening preferably) in or around Glasgow/Lanarkshire?

Re: Learning a new language

Lady I work with did an evening one at Anniesland college, she applied for that ILA thing so it hardly cost a thing! Not sure when it runs though, might be worth checking out their website?
