Although, there are exceptions.

| Re: travelling to u.s/convictions my team leader in work got caught drunk driving when he was 18, he's now 25 and almost didnt get let in.
the tour operator phoned him about 8 days before he was suppose to fly and said that he couldnt go, and would need to apply for a visa and go for an interview.
He couldnt get an interview in london so they made and exception and let him go to belfast/dublin or somewhere in ireland for the interview instead. |

| Re: travelling to u.s/convictions cheers for all the info people. fuck this is gonna be hassle, getting a memorandum of conviction from the court and all this shit. And then having to hit london for an interview, nightmare.
I dont suppose anyone on here would reccomend winging it on the visa waiver form clicking 'no criminal convictions' and hoping they dont check? |

Important: Some travelers may not be eligible to enter the United States visa free under the VWP. These include people who have been arrested, even if the arrest did not result in a criminal conviction, those with criminal records, (the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act does not apply to U.S. visa law), certain serious communicable illnesses, those who have been refused admission into, or have been deported from, the United States, or have previously overstayed on the VWP. Such travelers must apply for special restricted visas. If they attempt to travel without a visa, they may be refused entry into the United States.

You fill in the form before you leave the country/on the plane, they check it during the flight and then put you straight back on the plane at the other side if you don't pass muster. |

That would make more sense, because I've filled out loads of the wee green waiver forms, but no one checks them until you're at customs in the destination airport. Obviously, it's too late for me to be up, because I didn't even click that they don't check your forms on the plane. |

they dont do things by half measures in the usa | They scan your passport in the US and I'm guessing at that point it flags up anything for their attention..eg criminal records etc
If you use the visa waiver your back on a plain to blighty mate. I got many a call from people who this had happened too, more often than not it was a student that applied for a visa to study then before the got the visa took a trip to the US to sort accommodation but because they had already applied for a visa they couldn't use visa waiver to get in, shipped straight back.
It's sucks having to apply and go to London but it's better than having a trip ruined and your money wasted.
