| Re: Germany I stayed in Aparthotel Vega when I was there last year. It's not fancy, but it was clean, well located for public transport and nice and quiet during the night. The staff speak English, were very helpful with directions and the location is just off the Kurfürstendamm/Zoo. I might also add that the power shower was heaven sent the morning after a long night in bier halles! Quote:

People asked me in bars "so what do they do in Glasgow?". I had to change the subject

| Re: Germany I disagree with that to an extent. It's the type of both informal (as well as some official) methods of "policing", that actually causes a lot of problems.
Could even go so far as to say that part of the opposite result ("good behaviour") is partly down to that very factor; that they are left to their own devices. It encourages more responsible behaviour from a younger age, for starters. The way things are done here has, to an extent, bred a more defensive (and therefore, increasingly aggressive - especially when intoxicated) culture of "badly behaved" drinkers when exposed to and confronted with aggressive people, whose sole purpose is there to be a fairly intimidating presence.
It's not quite as simple as that, obviously, but I couldn't let you away with publically stating being "ashamed of my homeland", without defending it!

You're totally right though - it's not really a case that we (scots) are inherently 'bad' drinkers, it's more that we rail against the unfair restrictions place upon us. If we allowed 24/7 licences today we'd have chaos for a while (whilst people got used to an unknown level of freedom), but in a generation or two we'd probably even out to behave as reasonably as the Berliners do. You're spot on in suggesting that it's a problem of nurture, rather than nature.

| Re: Germany If we're getting in to that debate, then, if anything, I'd suggest a bit of both rather than one over the other; but we're not getting in to that right now are we!
And anyway, it's mainly the English that have spread a (pretty much) world-wide bad reputation for yobbish, drunkard, overly-aggressive behaviour; inter alia you English bastard~!!. The Scots are more often known as fun and friendly, abroad, whether drunk or not.
You get arseholes everywhere though, obviously.
Anyway, Germany.
Laya was saying to me that there's practically fuck-all to see in Cologne, other than the cathedral
Looks like I'll need to find my own entertainment after business gets attended to... anyone know of anything/where cool, there/nearby??

| Re: Germany what are you like at meeting folk? are you dead easygoing and can get on with everyone real easy? cause if you're looking for entertainment then there's different places. like say if you're introvert then go to places where everyone's cool and relaxed but if you're extrovert then go to places where everyone's up for it. mind you the music has to be good you don't want to end up in your worst club here, what club plays all the cool tunes? both jazz and folk

Koln is only a quickie, anyway. Purely business, mostly. Looks like Frankfurt and Berlin are going to be the main pleasure element(s) of this trip, then..!
Thanks for all the info on Berlin in particular, though, guys. It's clearly going to be awesome-possum

| Re: Germany Wish I had noticed this sooner. I am going to Germany next month too but it will be in Munich.
Frankfurt is very very cool, I'd like to go back and spend a bit more time there (only had 2 days and 3 nights the last time). It's got a very cosmopolitan feel to it with beautiful big buildings and lots of really cool trendy professionals everywhere. It reminded me a bit of New York, but a lot lot cleaner!
It has a lot of festivals too, including one that will have just started: Museumsuferfest (Museums Riverbank Festival) and is one of the biggest cultural festivals in Germany which attracts millions of visitors with live-bands, dance shows, crafts, jewelry, clothes and food stalls from all around the world and usually ends with an incredible firework display.
Dippemess is also on during September, and I'm not sure what else.. but it's a great time to be there that's for sure!
Such a lovely place |

Anyway, all boarding passes are GO! That'll save me a bit of time, and less faffing about at most airports. WIN. Quote:

Such a lovely place | Aye, apparently there is hunners on just now. My mate is actually picking me up from the airport and wanting to go out straight away, so I'm guessing I'm going to be fucked for the first night/proper day of my Frankfurt excursion, haha. I'm so excited about everything that has apparently been planned mostly without my knowing, up until now. Those wily bitches, gotta love ‘em!
Big Div Cloud/Ultima/whatever he's calling himself on here these days, was telling me to go to a St. Pauli game, in Hamburg; that the atmosphere is amazing, and that he's going in November. Everycunt seems to be off to Germany somewhere between now and November. That's another two people I was speaking to earlier today (and several throughout the week…and the week before!). Oh, OktoberFest probably has something to do with that, tchah! Hope I don't see anyone I know though, ffs!!
First thing I'm gonna do in Berlin, is sample the sausage
Excited about currywurst, in particular. I hear good things. Too many good things to not go out of my way to try it, at least twice.
I know you can ask for the version without intestines...but I take it there's just not even any chance of a veggie-option, though?? I'm happy to sample different traditional meats (calm yersel's), but I think I'd prefer that (if the option was there), tbh.

| Re: Germany Hey i'm so jelous your heading to Germany!
First thing to do when your in Berlin is buy a Zitty Berlin (unsure how its spelt) which you can get at the newsagents which tells you all sorts of cool events which are happening, gigs, parties, club nights, film nights etc. etc.
If you are into street art, take the Alternative Walking tour which takes you to alot of cool spots which you possibly might not normally see. It also takes you into a place which looks like a squat but is actually an art gallery!
My favorite bar was The Yaam, which was on the riverfront. It was a outdoor reggae type place and pretty authentic.
If you're in Munich you need to head to the beer gardens! I stayed at a hostel called ''the tent'' which was really friendly if not a bit bizzare.
Finally, I went to a cool wee place called Rothenburg ob der tauber for a music festival, but the town was beautiful and the people were lovely! |
