| Re: Germany Aye, nae bother Rab. I'll take photies for ye. Tut!
Just updated my travel ELLJAYE°! a bit, and cba changing it much. Ach, scheiße...!
This keyboard is mental btw...the 'Z' is where the 'Y' should be, and the EURO symbol is the 'E' key but it won't let me use it, and I'm getting all confuddled. I've had more complex keyboards than this before, but I just can't DEAL, today!
Lastnight, I was force-fed frankfurter sausages with sauerkraut, some amazing cheese thingy covered in onions, paprika and somethiing else I cant quite place... lots of schnitzel ("LIKE SECHS BEERS, Ja?!" "Heavy" ), massive jugs of applewine, called bembels...and discovered the hilarity of regional accents, and "keeping up with the Jones' " attitutde to ordering (and drinking) your big bembels_§!, in the local bars. Hilarious.
Also was privelleged enough to discover Juilians' rare talent for being able to impersonate every kind of German, Bavarian and former Eastern block accent, to exist. So I can now officially say (with perfect, accurate pronunciation, apparently) Prost (cheers!) in the relevent accent, depending on which part of Deutschland I find myself in, at any given time.
Heh.
So here, it's "Brrrroosst". But as you go down South, it's a more "Brrroaschtt". Good to knows.
Hit a trendy cocktail bar with Jan, Alexxia and Julian, after a couple of dirty bembels...and a LOT of shnoshaggez_! later... around the time I was apparently roped in to going to some festival/party in Stuttgart, this weekend.... Um, so I might get round to doing some work before Cologne (oopsy). But it's not looking too likely! I would do a wee winky, smiley face after this sentence. But I can't find all the appropriate characters on this bastard keyboard, so nae joy! The fact that, between us, we spent over over 300 EUROs (E Key, not hapening), is disgraceful.
But hilarious. Kinda.
But considering there's fucking AGES still to go, I might not find it quite as funny once I sober up a bit! Lulz.
The buildings that I thought were awesome when I got here, turns out, are smack-bang in the red light district. As I discovered around 4 o'clock this morning, as Jan carried a sink home with us.
Anyway, this keyboard, and my hangover is fucking with me a bit but whatever I was drinking has got me ZING (nearly wrote "YING", there) up-wide-and-awake so Im up a lot earlier than I should be, after a session like that. Sake.
Anzwaz, the sun is shining so, bis bald, guys!

I remember Sam saying it was baltic when he was there last February. So remember yer gloves!
Ock, I'll start by just C & P’ing what I wrote on Ms. ladysavages’ ^ ^ profile when I was hungover in Berlin a week or two ago, or whenever it was.. Quote: |

I stayed at the Park Inn hotel, beside Alexanderplatz which is really handy. It's only a brief stroll from lots of great bars and restaurants; very close to Unter den Linden (great street full of lovely cafés, etc - which leads on to Brandenburg gate, then Reichstag just behind it..and great view of the TV tower from my room as well. If you haven't booked anything yet, I'd highly recommend it
If you're on a tighter budget though, then maybe head towards Friedrichshain, which is central-east Berlin.. it's really quite cool, but also a lot cheaper, and still really easy to get around and close to centre or other cool parts. Went to a couple of parties there this week and stayed over. The buildings are typically (former, obv!) 'Soviet' and quite interesting. Really quite different from West Berlin. You should have a gander either way, regardless of where you stay. Take a walk down Frankfurter Allee/Karl-Marx-Allee to get a feel for it, at the very least (Or you can get a U-bahn to Samariterstraße - in between the stops: Frankfurter Tor and Frankfurter Allee) then go down the side-streets which are full of cool wee shops and bars...and if you take a right - will eventually lead down to the Wall.
Um, I might stick up some other cool places or tips that haven't been put up yet (although there were a few belters in there, heh!) in the Germany thread, once I get back home (which will be before you leave!) as I dunno how much you can write on these profile-comment-thingies…! |
I've got tonnes more tips and advice to add, for anyone who is due to be going shortly, but I'm way too lazy tired to start listing any of them just now -
Geiz a reminder the morra or something!

| Re: Germany right-o im just back from my wee adventure. Berlin is a fucking brilliant city, looks a wee bit like the shitty urban spawl of most big inner cities (not surprising considering when most of it was built) but rather than you usual "tracy is a fat hooor" graffitti the stuff there is amazing, well worth a gander with a decentish camera.
I recommend taking the walking tour with New Berlin The guides work for tips and it's informative and friendly (it's 4+ hours so wear good shoes and summat warm, it's fucking freezing there!)
I also went to the zoo, to see Knut the polar bear, who is pretty cool as zoo animals go, chucking a football at folk in the crowd, this also managed to waste a whole day (i loves me animalz, even if they're in cages) but if zoos aren't your cup of tea i would skip it.
I stayed in wombats hostel, just up from Alexanderplatz, it was clean, fairly decent sized rooms and all things considering, pretty quiet. It is totally no frills though, they give u bedding but you make up your own bed and if you're sharing a dorm theres another 5 folk there too. But for 21 euros (where the fuck is my euros key? stupid laptop) you can't whinge much. The staff are friendly and knowledgeable and its pretty laid back
It's easy to get around Berlin, the U-bahn and S-bahn systems are deceent and an all day ticket is 6.10euros for the inner bit, just remember to validate it using the wee red or yellow thingys next to the ticket machines or you get a 40euro fine.
By and large things over there are roughly the same price as Glasgow, thanks to the shitty Euro rate, but it's not too painful on the wallet.
Don't go if you're vegetarian, you'll starve
