#1 | | Guest | Tie dye I've never done it before, and I've bought a couple of tshirts and sleepsuits for the kids - how do I tie dye them? I know how to fold and how to band the fabric up, but how do you apply the dye? How long do you leave it for? | |

| Re: Tie dye Get cold water dye, make it up in a big tub, tie string/rubber bands round random parts of the garment, and soak in the dye for the amount of time it tells you on the box. |

however is you want to use multiple colours I can only imagine you would have to balance some of the garment out of the water (hang it over the side of the tub??) then dye that part later. |

| Re: Tie dye I haven't done this in years but the multi colour bit, you tie or peg off loads of bits and dip it in one colour, then you untie some of the bits and dip it in the second colour. Or you can dip dye it in the same colour of dye for a gradient of one colour. |

| Re: Tie dye I can't imagine you could do it without soaking it in dye - if it was a dye that was painted on it just wouldn't work. Its got to cover it - although make sure you tie your string or rubber bands really tight so it doesn't bleed. Quote:

| It really really isn't that hard. About the only 'work' involved is tying it and even that only takes 5 minutes.

| Re: Tie dye IF you read it, you'd see that you have to tie it up, and apply dyes seperatly (one at a time, for the uneducated mind).
Also, heres another link.. ON THAT WEBSITE... http://familycrafts.about.com/cs/tiedye/a/041601a_4.htm
no need to thank me.

| Re: Tie dye AFAIK, the bits that are tied don't actually pick up any dye, as they're compressed and unable to soak up liquid...Which gives the pattern. |

Plus t-shirts are only a quid or so, try away.

Goodness sake, youth of today etc etc. | Well theres no reason it wouldnt dye it well enough, if what you mean is would it be patchy - as long as you follow the instructions. The Dylon Cold Water Dyes are pretty good. |
