Lino Printing

Wanted to start doing this again after a 5 year gap since when I last did it at school. I've got all the materials and equipment to get fired in.

But what I want to know is how to go about doing multi - layer prints with several colours. I was nattering away to a guy in Miller's and he was saying its stunning when its finally done, but how to go about doing that ?
Would that mean multi blocks of Lino to get the seperate layers ? Obv starting with the lighest colour first, then getting another block of the same size but the next layer on it and print the next colour on top ? Or am I just missing something.

I already have did many plain black prints, the biggest being this one below, approx 27cmx27cm. Just a little interpretation of an American WW2 poster I saw printed onto sugar paper, but want to progress in complexity and colour. Also will be printing on mountboard to get a sturdier piece.

Any help or advice would be great.

Re: Lino Printing

i reckon you're right there - if you want to do more than one print of each, then you'll need a lino-cut for each colour.

The guys right though - they look awesome, as does yours up there ... good work man!

yeah - which means you can only use the print for one run ... right? So thats cool if thats what you want to do ... but if you want to do several runs, you'll need seperate layers.

Re: Lino Printing

ArtisticPenguin I thought about that but decided against it.

Reason being as what draws me to printing is the fact that the image can be easily replicated numerous times, and if I did it as you suggested that wouldnt be possible, in effect making me lose what I was wanting to achieve.

The Lino stuff that im using is like the flooring stuff is made from, kinda rubbery plastic with a stringy material woven through the back for added strength.

Im just gonna do as Dave suggested, get a few different pieces and do the layers individually allowing it to be replicated on demand.

Thx for all the help.

I love the green stuff a thousand times more than real lino!

Does anyone know where to buy it though? Didnt see any in miller or the art store

Also, another idea to mix colours in printing is to print loads in different colours, then cut the prints up and mix'n'match &glue them down.
