What do you soak the skins in? Formaldehyde?

Re: Practicing Taxidermy *CONTAINS GRAPHIC IMAGES IN LINKS*

They're rubbed with borax. The skins of the smaller things can be tanned, but just now whilst I'm learning there's not much point in going to all that expense for a practise piece.

I've not seen that episode, not seen scrubs in ages actually.
Was that a serious question?

This time around the tail was no problem BUT it's skull was badly damaged and skining around the eyelids was hellish. Took the left lids off by accient.

Re: Practicing Taxidermy *CONTAINS GRAPHIC IMAGES IN LINKS*

Got one of the mice on defrost now and I want to get the other mouse and rat pup done before the weekend. I think that next week I'll get more adult rats, they're a bit easier to work with.

You should make freaky hybrid animals.
A fish head on a squirrel's body and the like.

Like the folk at Rogue Taxidermy Minnesota? Scott, one of the taxidermists there is a bit of an inspiration to me

I actually 'aww'-ed at the wee baby rat.

I didn't think I'd like these at all, but it's really really interesting and I can see more now how it's an art. Well done

If I can make someone 'aww' at some cotton wool wrapped in rat skin, then I think I'm doing not too badly! I'll take that as a compliment, thanks hon
As far as learning goes, I'm still years away from producing the kind of thing I want to be able to put in shows 'cos it really is an art.

Thanks again

Are you constantly fighting the urge to dance around your room with those skins on your head, Jo?
