| Re: Practicing Taxidermy *CONTAINS GRAPHIC IMAGES IN LINKS* Rat pup number two.
I was planning to work on two mice, but during defrost there was too much hair slippage to work around, so in the bin they went.
1) Defrosted rat pup
2) Incision from throat to stomach
3) Legs cut at ankles, freeing up skin *may upset more than the other pictures*
4) Skin with borax and cotton wool
After covering all the inner skin in borax, I attached wire to the four ankles to articulate this rodent. Cotton wool was wrapped around the wire for shape. The body contains cotton wool, the tail is wire thinly wrapped in cotton and the head is a wedge of florists foam wrapped in cotton.
5)With the eyes in place, it's all finished (pictures safe for the squeemish) http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v3...2004/bben5.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v3...2004/bben6.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v3...2004/bben7.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v3...2004/bben8.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v3...2004/bben9.jpg
6) The final pose! Not sure which one I'll decide on, maybe the second. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v3...004/bben10.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v3...004/bben11.jpg
I'm really chuffed with this one. No accidental cuts in the pelt at all, worked around the genitals with no problem, tail/eyelids/lips all fine, 100 odd stitches and four hours of work.

This time I felt quite happy about how I'd structured the face, and because time was getting on and it was beginning to dry out already, I didn't need pins.
looking back at the big albino I worked on first, I can see LOADS of mistakes, loads and loads. This is why I want to keep everything I make for up to four months at a time. Two months to dry out (it takes alot less than this) and to keep an eye on them, and another two months for the sake of reference.

On another note, I got given a fox head today. coul of cracked teeth and wire poking out the ears, repairable i'd think, it was an odd gift though. |

!! Stick up a picture of the fox head, I LOVE old/vintage taxidermy. Oh, and if I can match fur colours I could probably patch up the ear, and repair the teeth at some point if you wanted it fixed.
