Learning to program in a Windows environment

First off - grab a copy of Visual Studio Express - the free version of Microsoft's full-fledged IDE (Integrated Development Environment) Visual Studio
http://msdn.microsoft.com/vstudio/express/

Next, jump right in with Microsoft's beginners lessons.

Admittedly, the first time I touched Visual Studio 2005, I was completely and utterly lost. I'd last touched Visual Studio when it was "Visual Studio 97 - for Visual Basic 5" and the changes since then were monumental, I wish I'd had something like this back then.

The one thing that annoys me about express editions is that VSTO (Visual Studio Tools for Office, the replacement for VBA) wont work with them, you need the full version.

Re: Learning to program in a Windows environment

I use VS2005 for the web apps we use in work.
Have to say, it's pretty good.

Works well together with SQL 2005 Enterprise too.
