sprains

me being the muppet I am, went right over on my ankle last night resulting in it making a rather nasty noise and it being sprained and swollen today.

Obviously a more sensible person than myself would have put ice on it when I got in from work, I ended up falling asleep though and woke up with it a wee bit swollen and sore.

I was just wondering if anyone could think of anything I can do to help it. It's going to bruise a peach I reckon anyway as I've left it so late now, so I doubt there's a great deal I can do on that front, but anything I can do to get rid of the swelling even?

Cheers!

Re: sprains

Rest Ice Compression and Elevation. Get off your feet, get a tubigrip on it with an ice pack and get your foot up. That means no running around like a fanny for the next few days. Arnica might be handy as well but the damage is probably already done.

Try ibuprofen gel (if taking topical ibuprofen don't take the tablet form as well). You can take paracetamol for pain as well in conjuction with ibuprofen (normal dosage - no more than 8 500mg tablets in a 24 hr period). The efficacy of tablet ibuprofen and gel is the same, one is just applied locally rather than systemically (throughout the body). It's never too late to apply some ice as well and you may want to get it strapped. Sprains can be so much more painful than a break...take it easy and if you can, keep your ankle elevated

Am I just the slowest typist in the world or what? Don't answer that

Re: sprains

don't think I've done anything too bad, the limpage is to a minimum anyway. I've got to go walk about glasgow for 3 hours later though

fun.

Re: sprains

if your going to be walking about on it for a fair amount later, i would advise you get it strapped up to support and keep the joint stable, reducing any further damage.

And aye, RICE it before you head out

Re: sprains

Phone in sick.

Wandering around Glasgow for three hours on a sprained ankle will probably cause it more damage. Knowing you, your leg'll probably fall off or something if you do. Little point in resting it for a couple of hours just to stress it hugely at work.

Strap it up and come round to ours instead and put your feet up. I'm considering chinese food :P

Re: sprains

If you do go out, here's a simple taping technique for your ankle that you can follow and apply yourself

weegiewench posts = True Story
Re: sprains

I fell down some steps in Sauchiehall St last night, by the time I arrived at the Cathouse there appeared to be a golf ball attached to my ankle bone. Woke up this morning and promptly fell over, foot is bruised all the way to my toes and right round my ankle. Spent 4 hours in the Western and now have a strapped up lower leg and foot, have severely sprained my ankle and can't work for the next week of my new job. Total baws. Does anyone else find those steps on the pedestriansed bit of Sauchiehall St from MacDonalds down to BHS a fricking death trap waiting to happen. There is no point to them what-so-ever.
