| Re: antibiotics plus paracetmol - do they mix? Seriously, none of you know if it's safe to take paracetamol with anti-biotics?? Basic medical knowledge i woulda thought! No offence to anyone that posted better safe than sorry etc, but still, bet more people know about non-prescription drugs than the stuff that makes you better!

| Re: antibiotics plus paracetmol - do they mix? See, I wouldn't agree with that at all.
The general public has a shocking knowledge of over the counter medication, and it's something I've witnessed on countless occasions from otherwise smart people. That's why we have doctors and pharmacists |

Disclaimer: Not medical advice, I'm off duty | But even if it is cox-2 preferential, it is still classed as a NSAID is it not? We have some cox-2 preferential painkillers for dogs with arthritis but they are still classed as NSAID's. I know not much aboput paracetemol with it being toxic to most animals alas so I dont even know if it is classed as a NSAID or just Paractamol on its own little world.

| Re: antibiotics plus paracetmol - do they mix? I didn't think paracetamol was an NSAID at all; I know aspirin and ibuprofen are, but I was fairly soundly convinced that paracetamol was classified very differently. |

Not really important. It just reminded me of one of my lectures when I did my diploma in chronic pain management . The guy mentioned that it acts as a sort of COX-3, as in the pathway. When i worked in NSAID therapy , I did have some difficulty in the definitive classifications. Purely because of the known gastrotoxicity of NSAID's as opposed to the COX's. In essence, anythiing that is not a steroid, but acts as an anti-inflammatory is an NSAID
The main point is, paracetamol is not known to be gastrotoxic
edit : found this on http://www.pharmweb.net/pwmirror/pwy...bpicmechs.html
Now, recent research (2) has shown the presence of a new, previously unknown cyclooxygenase enzyme COX-3, found in the brain and spinal cord, which is selectively inhibited by paracetamol, and is distinct from the two already known cyclooxygenase enzymes COX-1 and COX-2. It is now believed that this selective inhibition of the enzyme COX-3 in the brain and spinal cord explains the effectiveness of paracetamol in relieving pain and reducing fever without having unwanted gastrointestinal side effects.
