Workout recovery advice.

I had my first workout for months yesterday and took it fairly easy but am hurting a fair bit in a couple of areas. In particular the muscles around my inner elbow in my non-dominant arm are really tight and sore.

I've been stretching it all day but am a bit worried that it'll be too sore/tight for me to work out again tomorrow and I'm determined to stick with it this time.

Any advice from you fit types for speedier recovery?

Re: Workout recovery advice.

Just started with a personal trainer last week - she says "if you've been out of the game a while, break your workouts into muscle groups and work on a different muscle group on say Mon/Wed/Fri for a couple of weeks until you're ready to go to an every-other-day schedule again"

Hah, I can barely lift my left arm above my head right now (and trust the first job of the day to be a heavy physical labour job) after yesterday's punishment.

Re: Workout recovery advice.

A hot bath or hot water bottle to the sore area will increase blood flow and might relax the muscles a bit.

Re: Workout recovery advice.

Hot bath, have a wee stretch before bed tonight and once you get up in the morning. More excercise is the best way to get rid of sore muscles after excercise - no matter how much your body tells you it's not.

Got a hot bath planned and you've just reminded me I've got a heat/cold pack lying about somewhere. Gonna also take PapaZeb's advice and rotate the areas I work in for a couple of weeks. Fortunately I just did some light cardio, abdominal exercises & some upper body/bicep reps with free weights - plenty of other areas needing attention on this ol' body!

Re: Workout recovery advice.

That's the exact workout I did last night *hah*

She has me on legs/back/abs on Wednesday, then chest/abs/forearms on Friday (abs are strong enough to be done every session and are the best area to be worked on for men)

This is, and always has been, the hardest part for me - I think it's something psychological saying "but you're already hurt, now you're hurting yourself more - STOPPIT!!". That and the fact that I'm a lazy sod

Me too...but I used to have to take dance classes that lasted for 3 hours in college, and when we were scheduled with a class say on a tuesday and then again on a wednesday, I always felt much better after the wednesday class than if I'd had one on the monday then one on the friday. Plus all those little bits of extra stretching only benefit and get you fitter quicker!
