| Grudgingly Going Veggie After watching snippets of that chicken farming programme, my sister started talking about how people won't ever stop supporting horrible processes like that, because they always want the cheapest product, and don't really care about the animals themselves.
It shames me to admit that she's right when it comes to me. I know that the animal I'm scoffing probably hasn't been treated well, but it never stops me tucking in. But! Since I feel bad about having such a callous attitude, I'm going to make myself care.
So after tonight's last supper (a fish supper, yas!) I'm going vegetarian. For at least 3 months, hopefully longer. Perhaps forever...?
I'm hoping it won't be too hard for the most part. We hardly ever have meat in the flat (since I live with my veggie sister) but I'll certainly miss the odd sausage supper and the chicken curries my mum makes.
Anyone else considering/done this? Or any veggies who find it difficult to resist meat...? |

| Re: Grudgingly Going Veggie Just make sure you get a good amount of Iron through stuff like Spinach or Chick Peas, that'll be what you'll lack most with not eating meat, yer supposed to get about 14mg a day which can be hard to do being veggie.
Usually i'm against folk being vegetarians, but you seem to have a decent recent for it, well in

Best of luck to you |

| Re: Grudgingly Going Veggie Was vegetarian for 6 years, didn't have a problem resisting meat at all, and after a few short weeks, I much prefered being vegetarian.
However, I recently stopped being vegetarian - not because I didn't enjoy it/found it hard to resist but mainly cause I woke up one morning and just plain fancied it!
(although, let it be said that I wasn't vegetarian because of the animals or because it was a horrible process)
also: the most important thing about being vegetarian is - Stop eating fish.
You aren't a vegetarian if you eat fish.
FACT.
Fucking did my tits in that.

| Re: Grudgingly Going Veggie If you don't want to give up meat full stop then why don't you buy free range or organic? At least the animals have had a higher standard of living and fed a good diet rather than the cheap factory farmed meat. Tastes a lot better as well. |

largely true, but the more (individual) switch to more ethically produced meat, the more efficient the providers can be, and by the same token the fewer people are supporting the worse producers, which should narrow the price gap encouraging more to buy wisely.
But no, that'd never get everyone shopping with animal welfare in mind.
But only this week I gather the government has banned battery-farmed eggs: http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk/7180018.stm Quote: | Britain will press ahead with outlawing the production of battery-farmed eggs by 2012, the government has confirmed. | So I think (hope) that with a combination of consumer will and legislation things can improve, even if slowly.
I think that eating meat is a natural part of being human, and I don't criticise those who choose not to but I do have an issue with people who do a bad job of feeding their children appropriately, for example, by avoiding meat but not adeqautely adjusting the balance of nutrition... so there is a cloud over the notion of vegetarianism for me.
Good luck with your new regime!

| Re: Grudgingly Going Veggie I was veggie for a while when I was in my teens, not becasue of the animals, i just didn't really like meat.
Now I eat meat and still don't really care aboutht e fact it's an animal i'm eating. I grew up from a farming background, if everyone turned veggie what would happen to all the animals anyway? And the farmers, how'd they make there money.
