I've been thinking about changing contraeptive for a while now as being on the pill for 6 years I do worry about possible side effects.
I've been thinking about getting the Mirena (even though it's recommended for post-partum use rather than women who haven't had children) - it has the highest protection rate of all the methods, low side effect and risk profile (due to a much lower dose of hormone as it's only needed locally) and I won't have to rememeber to take a pill every day. | I dunno why, i really don't fancy IUD's at all. The whole getting then in and out thing can be rather uncomfortable by all accounts and seems a bit more invasive than I'd like.
I don't like doctors up my flange more than they need to be
Implanon has a 99.9% effectiveness. I can assume the other 0.01% is due to girls being very close to the getting it out limit and having sex despite the fact you're warned it might not last the full 3 years, particularly if you're overweight. |

| Re: implanon Mirena's tehcnically more reliable than sterilisation (don't ask how - I don't quite get it, but was told so by the gynaecologist at Stirling). I think I'm more swaying towards it because of the lower risk and side-effect profile (my mood swings and weight gain are pissing me right off). Having gynae exams don't bother me in the slightest cos I've seen (and done!) enough of them to be pretty immune to the embarrassment factor.
Apprarently it can be pretty uncomfortable to get it in, especially if you haven't had kids (cos your cervix is tighter), but again that doesn't bother me.
This thread has kind of strayed a bit too far into the realm of 'too much information'. |

| Re: implanon I'm on my second implant and I love it. Funnily enough, the nurse told me it would last much longer than the three years but that was all they were guaranteed for. Had the first one for about 3 and a half before I had it changed.
No periods, no spots, no weight gain, no crying, no mood swings. Suits me very well.
Would advise getting in put in at the Sandyford, the nurses there have done hundreds and are very good (and quick). My first one was done at my GP's family planning clinic and the nurse left massive bruises on my arm and I was in pain for 3 days. Second on was fitted at the Sandyford and was much better.

| Re: implanon yeah, I'm booked in for the Implanon clinic on Friday morning at the Sandyford. Figured they do it more often and all that.
i went there because even my doctor wasn't very clued up on Implanon or anything I was asking about
Hopefully it should sort out my massive appetite increase with my pills and mood swings i get on the week I'm not on them as it's a constant release of hormones.
Fingers crossed anyway.
I'm paranoid, don't think I could go over the 3 years without the fear! |

| Re: implanon I've had mine fitted for about a year or so now. I like it for the simple reason I'm really bad at keeping appointments (injection no) and when I was on the pill I'd go days forgetting to take it - potential disaster.
My periods are a bit odd though, I get 2 short ones every 6 weeks :s doesn't bother me, just bizarre.
When I got mine fitted, my med centre only had abut 3 GPs that were trained to fit it and said that nurses shouldn't be able to fit them. I guess it just depends on the surgery though. |

But, getting it inserted was one of the most painful experiences ever in terms of cramping it makes your periods alot heavier etc. Other than that I really had no complaints in terms of having to get checked out or any other problems, like weight gain etc.
I am good with remembering to take medication so I am quite happy taking the pill right now. Bit of a change, eh! |

| Re: implanon anyone that says Implanon isn't a bit nippy going in lies. LIES I tell you!
this is it after 2 days. Got a bit more bruised now. It's not sore or anything, but I didn't realise you had to get a local to get it in which was a bit stingy and then I had to go to work with a dead arm haha
They also bandage it up which looks ridiculous! |

| Re: implanon I was thinking bout this a wee while ago. Crystal has one and keeps poking it through the skin at me which is well rank. I fancy it as its not relying on having to take the pill all the time, That being said I have had absolutely ZERO side effects with Microgynon - I have even lost weight on it! The thingI like about the pill is running the pack together..hate having periods and the thought of having heavy unreliable ones on the implant freaks me out a bitty

Some girls get none at all. If it is a problem then they said to go back and there was tablets we could consider till it sorts itself out.
I know that the bleeding you get on Microgynon is only withdrawl bleeding and not a real period, but is it's safe to run packs together? |
