| John Prescott battles bulimia. Quote: |
Originally Posted by UK Press Association. Former deputy prime minister John Prescott revealed he suffered from bulimia, it has been reported.
Mr Prescott writes in the Sunday Times: "I've never confessed it before. Out of shame, I suppose, or embarrassment or just because it's such a strange thing for someone like me to confess to."
He adds: "I'm sure it was to do with stress. I wasn't doing it all the time, and there would be gaps of weeks and months, but during those years when we first got into power, I let things get on top of me and took refuge in stuffing my face."
Mr Prescott details his battle with the illness in his memoirs, which are to be serialised in the newspaper in May.
He says that the condition was stress-related, spanning from as early as the 1980s when he was in Labour's shadow cabinet.
Although he tried to keep his bulimia secret from wife Pauline, she realised what was wrong and persuaded him to see a doctor, the newspaper reports.
A consultant confirmed he had bulimia nervosa.
Prescott, who resigned last June and will retire as an MP at the next election, says he recovered from the illness more than a year ago.
He is supporting an NHS campaign to raise awareness of eating disorders. |
Well spank my ass and call me Charlie, JP-Hooker was one of the last people I ever expected to admit to having bulimia. Fair play to him admitting to it and attempting to raise awareness of the issue... But... Surely I'm not the only one to see the amusing side to this story?

| Re: John Prescott battles bulimia. hats off to the guy, he didn't have to admit it, and by doing so the way he has i think he's making a valid point / use of the statement to raise awareness. He's retiring anyway, so it's not even as if it's a big publicity stunt.
i hope it makes folk realise that it can affect anyone, even guys and it doesn't matter what job you're in. So if that even gets through to someone who then goes and gets some help then something worthwhile's come of it.
I know folk are only joking, but I detest the whole stereotype that bulimia only affects skinny folk and that you'll lose weight if you have bulimia. I can imagine not being what's considered wee that you run the risk of folk not taking you seriously when you try talk to them about it because I reckon it still has the stereotype of purging being something people do after every meal and therefore it affects your weight.
I remember hearing a guy at school saying about a girl in the year above that she was just attention seeking and couldn't have proper bulimia as she was still fat.
Views like that really disgust me and the sooner folk become more educated on eating disorders the better. |

Stay strong.
I'd never've pegged image-searching Prescott to be rewarding.
