| Old Scars... Does anyone know if anything can be done on the NHS to get rid of body scars? I'm talking about self inflicted scars of various sizes, about 3 years old. I wouldn't mind knowing if anything at all can be done because the need to hide them all the time is not much fun.
Thanks.
p.s. Yes I'm a member on the forum already, please do not reveal who I am if you figure it out or find out. |

| Re: Old Scars... I dont know about the NHS, but, depending on how bad they are, mac make a concealer that can cover scars, and Im sure theres one that even covers atattoos if you have a wee look about.
Your best bet is probably to ask your GP, and say theyre causing you considerable strife.

| Re: Old Scars... If you feel able to, I would also suggest talking to your GP. If the scars are effecting your emotional state, the NHS may well be able to help you.
Best of luck.

| Re: Old Scars... See, I can appreciate why its difficult to live with bad scars on your arms etc, purely because of the looks you might get and the whispering etc when people see them, and how this might affect you if youre already shy.

| Re: Old Scars... i am the same as you, i have a horrible scar at the back of my leg thanks to a football accident.
There are items on the market like ReJuveness but i would guess these were a fortune which begin to fade the scars away. I would doubt plastic surgery would do much though besides making more little scars to try and hide them, i have been told to get rid of my burn on my arm and the scar on by leg i would need a skin graff which means patchy skin.
I have heard that during operation procedures there is a form of steroid they inject into the wound when operating which means it will not be as inflammed looking, i am not too sure if the doctor would have any other information regarding this but i wish i knew about this before my leg operation.
The best advice is discuss it with the doctor if you havent already, he could suggest other ways that could limit the visability of these. I am afraid that there is no way of getting rid of them all together but maybe to cover them up but im sure your doctor can put you in touch with a specialist who can help you, but since it is a form of cosmetic surgery, it will not be cheap.
i know this is going to be a stupid idea but discuss it with your doctor first but what about acne scar removal cream, this is mainly available on prescription and it seems to be very effective on the worse of scars from what i have seen from my friends. There is a product which basically hides these scars called Silicol skin but it is kinda hard to find, i have seen it on ebay, but this is a very effective product, it masks the skin hiding anthing you dont want others to see and also it helps reduce the visability of scars.

There's every chance that the surgery you might be able to get to cover your scars would just leave you with more.
I have some pretty heavy scars on my legs, but they make an interesting talking point.
I've thought about getting someone to design tattoo's around the scar tiussue I have, to make them even more of a feature.
I figure I have them, might as well make them look amazing...

| Re: Old Scars... You could try laser treatment to minimise the scaring. It can be pricey bit it's worth it.
I can confirm that the organisation I've linked you to is a reliable one and not a bunch of cowboys.
Hope that helps. |

| Re: Old Scars... I may be one of a few people, but I do not know who this user is or if they are male or female. It is not a hard and fast rule by any means, but scarring to a young female often has agreater psychological effect ont hem than scarring to a male. (I deal with scarring claims as a part of my job but am by no means an expert). It may be easier in general terms for males to treat scars as a talking point and less easy for females and it does depend on where the scarring is and what type of scar has been left as there are a number of different typed of scars. I don't disagree with the comments about trying to love yourself with your scars, but this is not possible for everyone, and is not necessariy a logical thing.
If the scarring is causing .box so much anxiety it is having am ajor impact on their life then going to their GP is the only real answer. Their GP should assess the psychological impact and address other things that may be of concern.
.box - again, good luck. I hope you find a way to deal with this.

| Re: Old Scars... I am not sure Will expressed what he meant well. I may be wrong but I think he means that this user is clearly very concerned by their scars and at the moment is not able to "love themselves" hence this thread (which is a very brave thing to do as presumably from the first post this is a user who is known to a number of other users here). It is a step in the right direction to do this and be able to accept yourself, whether the scars can be treated or not.
