| owch kidneys!? For the past year or so I have been getting on off pains on my right side near my back, pretty much where my kidney's are
It seems to get worse when i walk about town for ages and get real cold or wet. or when i dont drink for a while or over-do it on the alcohol. Been to my doctor and she gave me antibiotics for incase it was a kidney infection or sumthin. that worked for a while but now the pains are back and are getting really uncomfortable
any one else experienced this or know anything about it? |

| Re: owch kidneys!? possibly kidney stones?
at any rate none of us are medical experts! If you've had it a while and it's still there go to your doctor and if your still not happy with the outcome as people have said I'd request to be referred to a specialist.
It evidently doesn't seem to want to shift on its own
Hope you manage to get it sorted! |

| Re: owch kidneys!? well when you're hungover your body's dehydrated (mostly what the hangover is) and when your thirsty it is too suggesting it is your kidneys. I'd keep drinking lots of water till you make it to see a doc |

| Re: owch kidneys!? If you had a test and it came back that there was no infection yet your GP still gave you antibiotics then I would go back and just ask straight out to be referred to a urologist. Maybe think about changing your GP too.

Maybe think about changing your GP too. | tbh they do that if they think its a urine or a kidney infection. It's pretty much standard practise I think. If you're bleeding when you go to the toilet, go a lot (or have other symptoms which makes them think its a kidney infection like sore back and burning up ) then they give you antibiotics like trimethropin or similar to treat it usually there and then and take a sample to send off to the lab as well to confirm. That takes a few days to come back though.
Obviously if you're running to the toilet every two minutes and passing lots of blood they'd rather give you something they're pretty sure will help it in the meantime. If it isn't an infection then you having taken the penicillin won't do any damage particularly except if your female the inconvenience if your a contraceptive pill taken of having to use condoms for the time you're on the penicillin and 7 days after. |

| Re: owch kidneys!? No, antibiotics probably won't do you any harm if you take them and don't need them. Still, GPs should not be prescribing antibiotics without reason. I know some do it just to get patients out the door and that is pretty bad practice. This is how you end up with resistant strains like......wait for it.....MRSA....woooo....a tremble runs through the room.....

any one else experienced this or know anything about it? | Just noticed this thread erm last year i had a similar problem.... kept getting kidney infections every 2 months and the tests came back as negative it got to the point that the pains in my side got so bad that i had to go to hospital where they discovered that my kidney was really swollen compared to the other one with some really strong tablets it has went away and aint came back yet. Did you go to the doctors? If you havent id advise you to go so you dont get as bad as i did. |

| Re: owch kidneys!? I had a friend when i was about 10 who had the same symptoms. They kept passing it off as a kidney infection but she ended up in bed for about a week at a time with excruciating pain in her side. 8 years on and they found out there was something that needed fixed in one of her kidneys and she's alright now.
I'm deffo not saying you have the same problem but it took them 8 years to finally sort her out, push to see a specialist just to be on the safe side. |
