Nosebleeds?

I had a nosebleed last night, nothing too substantial, but I'm feeling really blocked up today and a bit panicky when I try and breathe through my nose, as if I can't get enough air into my lungs.

Does anyone get nosebleeds regularly? How do you deal with it, and the aftermath? I feel like I'm choking.

Re: Nosebleeds?

I used to get them a lot when I was a teenager, and still get them from time to time.

Absolute pest, especially when they occur either in the bath or when you're trying to sleep (waking up on blood soaked pillows is never fun).

...that said I can't say I've ever experienced anything like you're describing Have you tried (gently) blowing your nose?

Re: Nosebleeds?

I'm really scared to in case it bursts open again - it didn't last for long last night, but there was a lot of blood. I've had a bit of a cold for weeks, and thought it was maybe that, but I might give it a shot.

Yeah as if I'm totally congested, but whenever I wipe my nose it's just crusty blood that's coming away and it's totally minging me out. I think I have karvol somewhere... I might go have a look.

Re: Nosebleeds?

Apparently you should spray a decongestant into your nose but Im not too sure about that. Googles not giving me anything useful at all.

Quote:
Symptoms
The most obvious symptom of a nosebleed is bleeding from the nose. But there are other symptoms that may indicate that you are about to have a nosebleed:

sinus headache (increased blood flow can cause congestion in the nose, leading to sinus blockages)
dry or stuffy nose
itchy nose
excessive sneezing or nose blowing

Things that Exacerbate Nosebleeds
Nosebleeds are often brought on by certain triggers, particularly a chronically dry nose. Smoking and drinking alcohol can also cause nosebleeds, because they cause the blood vessels to become irritated and break. A lack of Vitamin C, a proven tissue builder, may also be involved in causing nosebleeds during pregnancy.

Quote:
Complications of Nosebleeds
The majority of pregnant women who suffer from nosebleeds do not have to worry about adverse side effects, either for themselves or for their baby. Usually, the amount of blood lost is too little to worry about. Rarely, some women can lose large amounts of blood with nose bleeds during pregnancy. This can lead to weakness, fainting, and even the need for a blood transfusion. If you are losing large amounts of blood with your nosebleeds, go to your nearest emergency room. The doctors there will attempt to stop the bleeding. They may:

try to contract the blood vessels in your nose
cauterize the leaking blood vessels with certain chemicals
pack your nose with gauze
operate, if the bleeding is severe

How to Stop Nosebleeds
When you get a nosebleed, it is important to try and stop the flow of blood. Follow these simple steps for stopping nosebleeds:

Sit down
Lean forward and keep your head at a level that is above your heart
Pinch your nose firmly, just under the bridge
Maintain pressure for at least ten minutes
Don’t release this pressure until ten minutes are up – it will stop the coagulation process
If you have some ice, put a bag of it over your nose – this will help the blood vessels to constrict
Don’t lie down or lean your head back – this could cause you to swallow your blood, which can lead to nausea and vomiting
Once the bleeding has stopped, try not to blow your nose for at least 12 hours

Prevention
If you find that your nosebleeds are particularly annoying, try some of these quick fixes for future prevention:

don’t pick your nose!
try to blow your nose gently
when you sneeze, keep your mouth open to relieve the pressure on your nostrils
buy a humidifier for you house or office to keep the air nice and moist
put petroleum jelly or saline drops in your nose to keep the mucous membranes hydrated
drink lots of fluids, especially water
bulk up on your Vitamin C intake as it promotes tissue healing

Apparently its quite commen in pregnant women. Which Im sure is a great comfort, sorry!

I got a good few last week, though that may have had something to do with me battering my face off the side of my chester drawers, ouch.

Re: Nosebleeds?

I used to get nosebleeds a lot but it's because I used to pick my nose.
I'm no expert but what I would do is splash cold water up my nose while it's bleeding, dry the area, and stick a tiny amount of toilet paper up my nostril.
I'd then leave it there until I had to speak to a normal member of society.

this is actually good advice - time has been spent wandering around the house with tissues sticking out of my nostrils post-nosebleed.

Blow it gently, and don't be too worried if it starts bleeding again as that will give you the opportunity to get any snot out (if that's what's making you blocked up) Pinch the bridge of your nose and lean forwards.

...just pray you don't sneeze I once did that in a public toilet...

Re: Nosebleeds?

I get them fairly often in clusters, as in i'll get one then be susceptible to them for the next few weeks.
Tend to last anything up to 45 minutes, i find the tissues plan works not, as when i take them out it breaks the seal again, i just tend to position myself over then pan and let them bleed out.
One time i got one in the street and a guy stopped because he tought id been stabbed, as there was a nice pool of blood beneath me, which was amusing.

Re: Nosebleeds?

I used to get them quite badly, but haven't for a few years. No idea why.

Although it's always good not to wake up encrusted in your own blood.
