Tailbone pain

I've got a doctor's appointment next week to see about this but I just wondered if anyone else had experienced the same thing, and if so if you had any treatment for it?

I first noticed pain in my tailbone area after sitting down for a while a month or so before Christmas. At first I just put it down to sleeping/sitting in an awkward position, or having a bruise or something. However it's got gradually worse and becoming unbearable. It starts after about 10 minutes of sitting down and if I move from a sitting to a standing position it has to be very slowly or else it's really painful. Sometimes I get it while lying down, I've woken up during the night with my whole lower half stiff with pain.
I had a 9 hour bus journey recently and it was a total nightmare because of this.

I googled my symptoms (I know, I know) but the condition coccydynia sounds exactly like what I'm suffering. The main causes are childbirth or a fall (and I've not experienced either of these) but on further research I found it can be caused by poor posture, and as I have a 40 hour week office job I figure this has been the cause.

so... does anyone have any information about this? I'm particularly interested in if you got a diagnosis and any treatment you were given, as I can't put up with this for much longer!

Re: Tailbone pain

I had the same thing recently. I think I hurt my tailbone at primary school and a bumpy bus journey or something must have triggered it off again. It hurts like hell, thought I was going to have to get off the bus and walk it was so sore. Mines lasted about 2 weeks and gradually went away. (Workmate has a theory that I'm going to grow a tail and it's the growing pains!) I think my crap chair at work made it worse too. I'd be interested to see what your doctor says. *hope it goes away soon*

Re: Tailbone pain

thanks

I was hoping it'd go away by itself too, but after 4 months of pain I've had enough so that doc better give me some painkillers or something!

Re: Tailbone pain

I work in a 40 hour a week office job as well and for about 4 months last year I had unbearable pain on my tailbone as well and like you I thought I might've fractured it. In the end up I had to get occupational health out and they showed me how to sit properly and provided a 'riser' thing for my monitor.

Re: Tailbone pain

I constantly have a dull pain in my tailbone, normally when I wake. Just stretch it out or crack my back and it's all good.
Probably due to bad posture.
