The characters in her books aren't supposed to be saints, they're well rounded characters, so sometimes they do things that are a bit shite.
Don't confuse what her characters think with what she thinks....

I know the whole toothbrush thing's meant to be tongue-in-cheek, but the more I see it the more fucking horrible it seems.
I still find it difficult to believe that eating disorders directly stem from magazine covers and the like, and I reckon it's quite patronising to make such a claim. With most chicks who develop these problems I reckon there's something far more going on. | At what point does she claim to be writing to raise awareness of eating disorders? Her comments are directed towards a prevalent attitude that is seen in today's society and her references to girls with eating disorders serve the purpose of illustrating her point.
Moreover, she does not claim that eating disorders stem directly from the media. Why criticise her on things she does not actually say? She does not make this claim that you find so patronising. The latter half of the article takes her words in relation to the issue of eating disorders, but you are reading between the lines something awful if you think she's proclaiming that the media is soley responsible for eating disorders. Perhaps the scene you keep referring to in the Pink video is distasteful (I wouldn't know, because I haven't seen it myself) but it seems that the general jist of the video is an admirable statement, a mockery of the celebrity obsession with vanity and appearance.
Her statement isn't radical and is indeed open to criticism, but I think it's a praise-worthy statement to make. I agree with the majority of what she is saying, yet sadly, I recognise that things aren't going to change anytime soon. |

I really resent this bit though: Quote: |
those celebrities whose greatest achievement is unchipped nail polish, whose only aspiration seems to be getting photographed in a different outfit nine times a day, whose only function in the world appears to be supporting the trade in overpriced handbags and rat-sized dogs
| I think it's very fucking obvious who she's talking about there, and it's doing nothing but showing her ignorance. Paris Hilton may have been born into a life of extravagance, but she is also a millionaire in her own right. She does lots of work for charities and gives millions of pounds towards them every year.
Who died and made her role model? |

| Re: Harry Potter likes 'Bigger' girls You do raise really good points there. She goes from dismissing certain celebrities ie Nicole Richie and Paris Hilton as "empty-headed, self-obsessed, emaciated clones" but then goes on to recognise that anorexic celebrities need help. I don't agree with her in dismissing these kind of celebrities in that kind of derogatory and virtiolic way. It's ironic really. This is the way such celebrities are often portrayed by the media. How are we to know what these women are like, and thus, who are we to judge? I agree with her points on society's obsession with weight etc but she's getting nowhere by making personal attacks. She lowers herself to the level of the newspapers/magazines that she objects to. But then again, she does say it's a rant. |

Would Paris Hilton have made any money in the way she has if she had not been born into a life of luxury where she wanted for nothing? It is impossible to answer this. I also note what you say about her giving money to charity but it has to be remembered that charity donations are good for tax write offs and I am not sure I have ever seen any of her accounts to know how much she donates to charity. Certainly Paris Hilton does, on occasion, use her name to help charities and I am sure she (or people she employs) organise fundraisers which are good for awareness as well as raising money (and good to get out the champagne and party). I am not sure I can state that she did any of this off her own back though.

| Re: Harry Potter likes 'Bigger' girls Well I personally find Harry Potter downright awful but you don't see me ranting and raving about JK Rowling in my LJ, calling her "cunty" or anything do you? No, you don't. So fuck off Rowling. Skinny girls are pretty. Not as pretty as chubbos, but still. |

She's done all of this when she could've just lived off of her parents' money, but she decided instead to make a name for herself and do something more worthwhile than that. Quote:

Jesus Can we not instead assume people give money to charity because they care? |

None of us can assume with Paris Hilton what she does and why she does it as we simply don't know so any comment we make is an assumption. However, there are plenty of socialites who do work very hard for charities and work hard to make their own money who don't do so in the public eye. I am not saying Paris has courted publicity but I am saying there are other people who don't seem to be in the public eye in the way she is.

| Re: Harry Potter likes 'Bigger' girls My rant here -
People with ANY form of weight problem being ridiculed arent going to be helped.
Im fed up of reading about how fat Kelly Osbourne was, when she was what, a 14, 16?
Nicole Ritchie is ILL. Eating disorders arent funny, Pinks video was downright irresponsible. Think of all the young girls watching that who idolise people like Paris Hilton. Shoving a toothbrush down your throat isnt healthy, but its not something to be pointed and laughed at.
Im not mad keen on Paris myself, but then again I know sweet fa about her, as does JK. Shes an adult for Christ sakes, she should know better, shes not exactly famous for her looks like these girls shes poking fun at are.
