| Re: Goths 'more likely to self-harm' The article I saw in the paper yesteday said the research claimed that instead of young people becoming a 'goth' then self-harming, the trend appeared that the children who had self harmed at a younger age went on to be attracted to the gothic culture and it's strong friendship groups. Since becoming a goth the instances of the previous self harmer relapsing was less frequent. This sounds a lot more sensible to me. |

| Re: Goths 'more likely to self-harm' its amazing the differences that can be taken out of the same piece of research.
bbc news title - " Goths 'more likely to self-harm'"
new scientist title - " Goth subculture may protect vulnerable children"
slightly different eh? http://www.newscientist.com/article....ine-news_rss20
based on the same research, it was found that people who self harm, then join the goth subculture were less likely to self harm after that, as they got support etc from friends.
EDIT: which is pretty much exactly what juicebox just said. thats what i get for not reading all the posts properly |

| Re: Goths 'more likely to self-harm' This is why you should take all journalism with a pinch of salt at the very least.
Also I love the fact (missing from the Beeb article, incidentally) that of the 1250 or so kids sampled only 25 called themselves Goth, and from this they felt the judgements were indicative of an entire subculture

But he cautions: “However, the study was based on small numbers and replication is needed to confirm our results.”

| Re: Goths 'more likely to self-harm' I was referring to the implications of the title and first paragraphs of both articles.

| Re: Goths 'more likely to self-harm' Well, yes, if you ignore the fact that the guy acknowledges that more work needs to be done, it does make him look unreasonable. The other articles cherrypicking facts from it aren't really relevant.
