Is it not more a case of "goths more likely to admit to/claim to self harm".
In most parts of youth culture self harming would be something you would be ashamed of where as Nihilism (which i can't spell today) is worn almost as a badge of honour within goth culture.
I'm sure there some 'goths' who self harm because they have real problems and need a release ect ect, but there are also a fair chunk who will claim to because in some twisted sense they think its "cool".

i guess im trying to say "just because you wear black doesnt mean youre a goth" - likewise, "just because youre a goth, doesnt mean you self harm". looking at it from a mis-informed view, that came from a media story, also not accurate across several newspapers.
i think im going for the "multi-tasking: its easy done to look silly and be stupidly wrong when you dont know the full facts" angle
