Cylinder Head Needs Replaced - advice

The cylinder head on my Corsa needs replaced and from what I can gather it's going to cost a fortune, so I was wondering if anyone had any experience of getting one replaced and knew of somewhere relatively cheap. Somebody quoted me £900 and it's pretty much not worth getting it done at that price.

the cylinder head went on my first car and although the part i needed was summat like 30 quid from halfords you need to take the whole sodding engine apart to do it which is why it's so expensive. Thank heavens for my mothers taste in mechanics!

Re: Cylinder Head Needs Replaced - advice

Could be a whole host of things. IF the head is gone and needs replaced you're stuck with the cost of the part. Personally, i'd get a garage to source a 2nd hand one. Presuming there's no damage to the engine block or any of ther ancilliary components then you're still facing a hefty labour charge for removal of the cylinder head plus all the new gaskets. A garage will probably want to skim the new head and pressure test it. None of this cheap stuff I'm afraid.

You've not given us a lot of info to go on, depending on the age of the car and the actual problem that could either be an expensive price or a really cheap one.

Its not the part that normally costs in this case, just the time to get it done normally.

Re: Cylinder Head Needs Replaced - advice

How old is the car? I had an old rover 416 a few years back that needed the head changed, and it worked out far cheaper to buy a whole new (second hand) engine and get that dropped in.

This might not apply if it's a newer corsa, but the older shapes are plentiful in scrappies.

Re: Cylinder Head Needs Replaced - advice

Cheers for the advice. It's 7 years old (2002) and has a cracked cylinder head. I've taken it to a couple of garages and they said it had to be replaced and would cost around £900 for the work/part.

I hadn't thought about just replacing the engine, but that might be an option depending on how cheap I can find one for.
