| Engine Tuning/Remapping. I need a new exhaust for the car so I took it to a place that makes custom Stainless Steel exhausts, they guy also does engine remapping.
He said he could sort me out with a SS system (from downpipe back( and a remape for £800.
That'd take me from 150bhp to 208bhp.
I'm tempted, I really am.
Has anyone had this done before?
Anyone know anywhere good that's worth calling to get a price comparison?

| Re: Engine Tuning/Remapping. i don't know anyone who's done it but i'd be interested to hear your thoughts if you do.
i've never been quite sure just how this kinda thing would affect the car - i mean, just one number for the maximum power doesn't tell you much eh? since that almost always comes at the top of the rev band it might make less difference than you'd expect except for when you're really spanking it. for me, i'd wanna know what sorta difference it makes to the torque and power at lower revs before spending any money...
i've got 245 bhp* and 289 lbs/ft of torque ; the engine that replaced mine has 290bhp and 287 lbs/ft and by all accounts feels slower if you do anything other than utterly horse it.
i'm sure it'd be an improvement but hard to know just how much, hence how worth the cash it'd be. make him take you out in one he's done! *says wikipedia; i though it was 235 but whatever...

| Re: Engine Tuning/Remapping. His estimate of 58 extra Bhp just for a second half stainless setup and a remap seems a tad ambitious, but I’m not au fait with your model of car so don’t take my suspicions as gospel.
I’ve never chipped my car, but I do have a custom full stainless exhaust and cat delete. My mods have mainly been to the turbo system instead.
If you’re needing a new exhaust anyway, get an upgrade. That’s a no-brainer. Shop around though. Look for an owners/enthusiasts forum online and ask the question. See if there’s anyone out there doing a readymade improved system you can have bolted on that’s tried and tested. It’s always best to find a specialist in your particular car than go with a guy who makes one-offs for all makes and models.

| Re: Engine Tuning/Remapping. Very often, performance tuning puts in extra power at higher revs.. which is fine for racing, not so good for town driving..
Rather than just looking at the end bhp figure, look at the performance curve from one thats been done and put on a dyno.
All depends how you drive it I guess... do you want extra top end, or do you want more grunt??
Also.. more power = more strain on the engine..

| Re: Engine Tuning/Remapping. my audi is booked in to get mapped at Star Performance in fife ( i organised a group buy and got like £100 off for everyone) and it will take my 130bhp TDi up to about 175bhp on a stage 1 map and it should also bump up the torque from about 226fl/lb to about 290ft/lb and im paying £200 to get it done.
the thing you have to watch out for is clutch slip and destroying the clutch. i know with the S3 if you map the standard 225bhp engines on a stage 1 map it would take it to about 265ish bhp and it eats the clutch.
a decent map shouldnt just boost power at the top end, it should take out any flat spots put in by the manufacturer to make the car more economical for sitting at certain speeds etc.
what car you mapping?? because it depends on what car it is your dealing with as some cars are more expencive to map than others. if your not after uber power then why not go for an aftermarket stainless system? ie Remus, Miltek, or whoever makes exhausts for rice burners

| Re: Engine Tuning/Remapping. Ive got a BMW 320cd.
It was a company called EcoTune who were going to do mine.
I'm probably going to get an exhaust anyway, I'd never considered a remap before until I was chatting to the who makes the exhausts.
Where are you getting yours done?
I've been trying to price an aftermarket exhaust system for my car but the websites are terrible.
You know any where worth looking online?

| Re: Engine Tuning/Remapping. Anno.
Re-read it and spotted that.
They don't do BMW.
I'm still on the hunt for an aftermarket exhaust upgrade.
Most of these company websites are truely horrific.

| Re: Engine Tuning/Remapping. I had a quick read on Pistonheads and 3 series owners seem to talk mostly about Jetex or Scorpion exhausts. Dunno anything beyond the brand names though. They also all seem to recommend a bloke called Simon and his E-maps company. They’re down south, but a couple of the BMW forums I came across have organised group buys where he visit Scotland to do a bunch of cars in one day.
Have you checked with your insurers about what the mods will add to your premium? Some insurers can be absolute bastards about remaps and exhausts, especially the more mainstream companies.

| Re: Engine Tuning/Remapping. right im just back from getting the mapping done on my A4 and ive jumped from a standard 130bhp engine, rolling roaded before the map with just V-power diesil and a performance pannel air filter at 144bhp, then it was mapped to bang on 180.0bhp and 297lb ft torque. i love it, it still drives teh same if your not trying but poke it with a stick and it due to the 4wheel drive system it just digs in and launches off the mark! very happy
