11 years on since his untimely death, I'm sitting watching his cover of Hallelujah. If you have a couple of moments to spare, listen to his voice.

On the evening of May 29, 1997 Buckley's band arrived by plane with the intent to join him in his Memphis studio and work on the newly written material. That same evening Buckley went swimming in Wolf River Harbor, a tributary of the Mississippi River, while wearing boots, all of his clothing, and singing the chorus of the song "Whole Lotta Love" by Led Zeppelin. A roadie of Buckley's band, Keith Foti, remained ashore. After moving the radio and a guitar out of reach of the wake from a passing tugboat, Foti looked up to see that Buckley was gone. Despite a determined rescue effort that night, Buckley remained missing. On June 4, his body was spotted by a tourist on a riverboat and was brought ashore.

The night before his death, Buckley excitedly told his girlfriend Joan Wasser that he believed he had found the cause of his dramatic moods, namely bipolar disorder. The autopsy to clarify the cause of Buckley's death confirmed that Buckley had taken no illegal drugs before his swim, and a drug overdose was ruled out as the cause of death. Soon afterwards a memorial service was held at St. Ann's Church; the same place where Buckley paid tribute to his father five years earlier. His body was cremated and his ashes interred at his estate. He was thirty years old.

oh man it's last goodbye! why is everyone saying hallelujah i mean it's a brilliant cohen song and shows his transcribing abilities. but it's last goodbye, the headline is tantalisingly as sexually charged as hallelujah but it comes from his own heart

and a little bit beats in all of us r.i.p jeff buckley

The Indelicates — If Jeff Buckley Had Lived

And there's a fog growing at the edge of the lake
And there's a star falling at the edge of the lake
And there's a man praying at the edge of the lake
And there's a flicker of religion in the chances you take

If Jeff Buckley had lived
There'd have been weeks of sickness
Acid vomit in his throat
And awful press pictures.
He'd have turned down half the needy
Who asked him to give
And plenty would have cursed him
If Jeff Buckley had lived

And there's a fog growing at the edge of the lake
And there's a star falling at the edge of the lake
And there's a man praying at the edge of the lake
And there's a flicker of religion in the chances you take

If Jeff Buckley had lived
He'd have been short on the throne
And counted his life out
In an old rockstar's home
Where they play 'Hallelujah'
Every retrospective
And most wouldn't know him
If Jeff Buckley had lived

And there's a fog growing at the edge of the lake
And there's a star falling at the edge of the lake
And there's a man praying at the edge of the lake
And there's a flicker of religion in the chances you take

And there is no salvation at the hands of the fates
And there is no design to whom death comes to take
And the faces in the vapour, they are lies and mistakes
Every day there is a fog there, at the edge of the lake
Every day there is a fog there, at the edge of the lake.
