Autistic Youth hail from Portland USA, are barely out of school, and they're already making some of the best punk rock I've heard for years. An absolute treat for anyone into late 70s/early 80s American punk - Adolescents, The Wipers, The Avengers etc - but just as good for everyone else, AY get the balance right between aggression and melody.
Local support comes from Intentions - melodic hardcore from Dundee/Edinburgh. The fact that they've got ex-members of Engage and In Decades Decline on board should suggest something as to their style and quality.
Rounding up the line-up will hopefully be Jer Reid & Shane Connolly, a minimalist duo pounding out something akin to The Ex or The Minutemen in one of their more 'freeform' moods. I can't vouch for Mr Connolly, but Jer's been playing in or releasing records by some of the best punk bands ever to come out of Scotland - Dawson, Whirling Pig Dervish, Badgewearer - so you know this won't disappoint.
Wednesday 9th July
The Twisted Wheel
(73 Queen St)
Doors 8.30pm £5
Jer and Shane can't make this unfortunately, so they've been replaced by The Lie Detectors. I saw this lot the other night and they're easily one of the best pop-punk bands in the UK, sound more like The Lillingtons than the Lillingtons do. Citizens are going to be playing as well, everyone in Glasgow's seen them by now so you know what they sound like.
If you miss this gig you've got a face like a blind joiner's thumb.
